
DR. REGIS V. SHALLEY
Dr. Regis V. Shalley began his professional career as a dance band musician and director of dance and stage bands with the US Army Air Force Special Services. He later served as chairman and conductor of the 432nd Army National Guard Band from 1957-1959. At Duquesne University, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education (1949) and Masters of Science in Music Education (1955). He later attended the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in 1972. Dr. Shalley was listed in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges.
Following 4 years as Supervisor of Instrumental Music and Director of Bands in the Munhall School District, Dr. Shalley became choral director at Baldwin High School in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District where he served for 28 years. During his time there, he directed a Boys' Glee Club, two Girls' Glee Clubs, the Baldwin Highlander Choir and the Baldwinaires as well as served as Chairman of the Fine Arts Department for 5 years. Under his direction, the Baldwin choirs performed at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) State Convention, Miami University (Ohio), West Virginia University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Thiel College, University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University.
Dr. Shalley was a 28-year member of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA), in which he served terms as Vice President and President and as a member of the Executive Council. He was also a long time member of the National Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association. He was named an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America.
Outside of teaching at Baldwin High School, Dr. Shalley served as Chairman and conductor for the Allegheny County High School Chorus for 8 years; directed several church choirs and served as adjudicator for several Pittsburgh Diocesan secondary school choral festivals; conducted choirs at Duquesne University, Washington & Jefferson College and the University of Cincinnati; served as guest conductor for a PMEA district chorus festival; and performed as a dance band musician for many years.
Under his direction, thousands of students were exposed to a rich diversity of music while being trained in advanced vocal skills and choral techniques. Because of Dr. Shalley's passion for excellence and love of beautiful music, many of his students have continued to pursue the interest in vocal music which he inspired, at many levels and in a variety of venues.
